PHIUS+ 2018 and PHIUS+ Source Zero

George Sollitt Construction is proud to announce the completion of the pre-certified PHIUS+ 2018 and PHIUS+ Source Zero St. Joseph’s new 2-story, 11,000 gsf school addition. The Passive House Institute US, Inc. (PHIUS) is a “performance-based” energy standard that includes prescriptive quality assurance requirements.   The performance standard relies on three pillars: Limits on heating/cooling loads (both peak and annual), Limit on overall source energy use and Air-tightness and other prescriptive quality assurance requirements.1 PHIUS+ Source Zero is an optional add-on badge for a project, which requires the facility to offset the building energy by on-site renewable generation.

Sollitt worked closely with St. Joseph School and Serena Sturm Architects to collaboratively achieve pre-certification of both PHIUS categories by incorporating high performance Air Barriers for Air-tightness, Bigger R Valves in Roofing and Exterior Walls, Dense Vapor/Water Barriers, Sun-shading Devices, Photovoltaic Panels, Daylighting Controls and energy efficient Mechanical and Electrical systems.

In addition to accomplishing the PHIUS pre-certifications, the construction design included several new staircases, ramps and new elevator to make the 100 year old School Campus fully ADA accessible. Other features include newly connective hallway circulation, green spaces to house a variety of indoor plants and new classrooms, administrative offices and restrooms with modern finishes, tall ceilings and impressive daylighting from numerous windows, skylights and polycarbonate panels.

St. Joseph School, Serena Sturm and Sollitt are excitedly awaiting the final PHIUS certifications.
