Kovler cGMP Lab Facility

Chicago, Illinois

Architect: OWP&P

The University of Chicago/Biological Sciences Division’s determination to convert an unused basement space into a state-of-the-art cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) facility dedicated to advanced stem cell research, demanded a clear vision, both of the possibilities and of the process required to make it happen. Building a modern cGMP facility within the confines of a busy institution such as The University of Chicago is no place for on-the-job training. And one look at the array of ductwork, piping and conduit needed will prove that this is, indeed, a tough technical challenge.

The construction process was especially demanding because of the extreme standards of cleanliness required to obtain certification of the finished facility and because of the stringent documentation procedures established for each phase of the work. Every tradesman received advance training and instruction on the strict guidelines required for working within the area. No eating, drinking or smoking was permitted. All materials were to be cut, trimmed and prepared offsite. Each separate piece of ductwork, for instance, was fabricated, numbered, cleaned and sealed prior to delivery. Each piece was again cleaned before being brought into the space, unsealed at one end, installed, and checked off the list. In later phases of the work, all workmen were required to don clean suits and have all tools and equipment disinfected prior to entry into the space. Even one breach of discipline could have seriously compromised the standards and rendered the facility unusable.

Because of a collaborative team approach, this challenging project was completed on time, on budget, and met every rigorous standard of clean room construction. Indeed, our procedures proved so effective that the testing and certification process determined that, in addition to easily meeting all requirements for the targeted Class 10,000 space, we met two out of the three parameters for a Class 1,000 space, or as much as ten times cleaner! The finished product is a testament to the kind of know-how that can successfully integrate vision, design and construction into a facility that will keep our client at the leading edge of research.
