This expansion and renovation – the largest in the history of the Union Church – involves virtually every area of the facility and the site.  Demolition of the existing rectory provides space for a 200,000 gallon underground storm water retention system extending beneath three new parking areas. S ite work also includes new curbs, sidewalks and dropoff areas.

Work includes the demolition of a 10,000 square foot classroom structure and replacement with a new, three story, 25,000 square foot addition.  Basement storage and an expanded narthex are provided by a new two story addition located adjacent to an existing courtyard and completely surrounded by the existing sanctuary, close, and a classroom/administrative wing.  The location of this element, requiring a deep excavation and a new structure within the heart of the complex, demanded an extremely detailed planning approach in order to maintain utility service and access to surrounding spaces.  Relocation of a 220 square foot stained glass window provides improved access between the expanded narthex and the enlarged entry to the sanctuary.

About 48,000 square feet of the existing facility is renovated with new windows, doors, and interior finishes.  New HVAC, electrical, and fire protection systems are provided throughout.

The careful selection of materials and form is designed to bring the addition into harmony with the graceful architecture of this fine, old church.
