Mar Thoma Shleeha Cathedral is located at 5000
St. Charles Rd. Bellwood, Illinois. This new 45,500sf cathedral
seats more then 1,165 people.
The Mar Thoma Shleeha Cathedral serves the newly
established diocese of Syro-Malabar (Indian) Catholics in the United States. The cathedral serves as the center of
activities for the 800+ families of Sryo-Malabar Catholics living in the Chicago
area, and for the 100,000+ Indian Catholics following this rite in the United
States and Canada.
Designed by JNA Architects, the new cathedral
features an octagonal, column-free worship space seating 1,165 people, as well
as a daily chapel and reservation chapel. A full basement provides a large
multi-purpose gathering space for the community, and church offices and
administrative spaces are located on the partial second floor. The
exterior design of the cathedral incorporates traditional forms that reflect the
historic patrimony of the Catholic Church, including a classically inspired
front façade featuring a triumphal arch entrance portico, a vaulted niche with a
statue of St. Thomas, and a pediment roof.
