Chicago Greenworks
Greenworks Storage and Office, Public Road and Site Prep
Chicago, Illinois
Architect: Farr Associates
The Chicago Greenworks Campus Development project is
a 12 1/2 acre former Brownfield site. The project included the
construction of an approach road (constructed by CDOT), an interior
loop road and utilities, a private perimeter service alley, common water
detention area, as well as development of a headquarters for Christy
Webber Landscapes. The Landscapes facility consists of a 9,000sf
office building connected to a 10,000sf shop building. The facility achieved a LEED Gold rating because it incorporates innovative
sustained design features throughout; a few of these features are a rooftop greenhouse which
will enhance the fresh air for the building, use of recycled building
materials, solar panels and a green roof. Additionally, site work
was designed to minimize storm water runoff by including the use
of cisterns to collect rainwater from the rooftop, which Christy Webber
Landscapes will use for watering plants throughout the City.
The overall project is a first-of-its kind
eco-industrial development incorporating bioswales, as well as permeable
paving throughout the site, including the public interior loop road. This
development is a perfect real-life demonstration of the many sustainable
design concepts introduced at the adjacent Center for Green Technology.
